We live in Calne, a small town in the south west of England.
ReplyDeleteIn Summer Calnes average temperature is between 12*C-22*C, while in winter it drops to an average 2*C-9*C. We do occasionally drop below 0*C, but it doesn't last for too long. It rains on average 20 days of each month, with heavier falls in winter compared to sprinkles of rain in the summer. We have been very lucky this year as it hasn't rained as much as usual.
During summer we wear t-shirts and jeans, occasionally singlets and shorts on hotter days once we have acclimatised!
We eat a lot of salads and have BBQ's in the back garden with friends and family.
We use portable fans as air conditioning as we very rarely need the house to be cooler.
In summer we enjoy going to water parks, ( swimming in the ocean is still incredibly cold!) going for walks, laying in the back garden soaking in the sun and having the occasional water fight. We also go down to the coffee shop called Costa and often have takeaway iced coffees which we take to the stream, sit on the bank and enjoy time with friends.
In winter we tend to stay indoors alot as it rains often and also snows (usually around February). If you work in the mornings you have to wake up earlier to defrost the car and heat it up as you can't see out of any of the windows as they get covered in ice overnight.
We have heating throughout all houses here and fleece pyjamas are a constant christmas gift that gets used everyday throughout these months! We all have big fluffy waterproof coats that we have to layer over thermals when we leave the house. Scarves and gloves and beanies are very helpful when you have to walk to work in the cold.
We eat a lot of roast Sunday dinners and comfort food like baked veggies, bangers and mash (Sausages and mashed potato), full english breakfasts and anything warm and cheesy! We like to sit in the front room together on winter nights and have warm drinks and chocolate.
In winter we go ice-skating and when it snows we make snow-men and have snowball fights. We play a lot of board and cards games inside like scrabble, yahtzee and monopoly. We also like to go to the cinema (I always bring a little blanket with me to keep warm!) and bring in a warm cup of coffee and popcorn.
Today it is sunny and 16*C so true to english summer living, I will be getting iced coffee with friends and sitting by the bank of the stream before going to work.
Moe Appleton.
How can you drink iced coffees in 16 degrees? Your summer daytime maximum is the same as our summer night time temperature. Do you have to bring an umbrella with you all the time?
DeleteYou get very used to being in below 10*C weather, the days it goes over feel like hot summer days! (Especially if the skies are clear!) As for umbrellas, we tend to favour waterproof parkas and coats as you never know whether the wind will pick up and turn your umbrella inside out! (This has happened numerous times)
DeleteSunny Perth has experienced a number of really hot days over the early part of the year. The high temperatures contributed to some very big bush fires and loss of property in WA.
ReplyDeletePeter Richards
We heard about the bushfires this summer. They were very bad. What is Perth like in the winter? What is the hottest temperature you have experienced ?
DeleteCalne the jewel of England, The temperture is varied from -3c in the winter up to 30c in the summer but very inconsistent. It also Rains A LOT. It snows sometimes in the winter however.
ReplyDeleteAre there any theme parks near Calne?
DeleteI live in Tamworth, in summer, Tamworth's temperature is on average 35 degrees but can gets all the way up to 39 and 40 but the record is 45.1. In winter day time temperatures are around 16-17 degrees and overnight go down to about 3 degrees but can go to about -5 degrees. Rainfall is experienced all year round but we do tend to have droughts in the summer.
ReplyDeleteIn the summer we wear shorts, singlets, hats, thongs, and plenty of sunscreen. We tend to hide in the shade a lot too. There are lot's and lot's of flies here and during the country music festival some people like to wear cork hats to help keep the flies away, there are also lots of wild pigs around here, kangaroos and wombats are seen often too. We eat salads, sandwiches and wraps with cold meat, and enjoy having a BBQ in the back yard, we also like eating lots of icy poles. We cool down by sitting in the air con and going for a swim at the dam as the closest beach is a 3 hour drive away.
In the winter we like to wear boots big jackets and scarfs and as the day warms up we take off some layers and end up in jeans and long sleeved shirts until it starts to cool down again. We like to eat things like roast dinners and soups and hot chocolate. We warm up with fires out doors and in and the air con does a great job at warming us up too. It doesn't snow in Tamworth but sometimes in nearby villages such as Nundle it snows a little and we love going up and building snowmen and having snowball fights.
Right now it is 10 degrees, very cloudy, a little bit windy, and looks like it might rain. I am staying inside today and might watch a movie.
Rhiannon Bond.
It sounds like Tamworth is a lot like Canberra only hotter. Aren't the corks on the cork hats more annoying than the flies?
DeleteI live in Barrie, Canada. In this region the temperature can climb up to 35 degrees Celsius in the summer and descend to a chilly -25 degrees Celsius in the winter. We have mild spring weather and nice cool and crisp autumn weather which varies in temperature and how long the weather lasts before if transitions into summer or winter like weather.
ReplyDeleteDue to it getting so cold in the winter, it is expected that we get lots and lots of snow!
For about 101 days a year, Barrie has at least a centimetre of snow on the ground. In mid-winter the snowpack averages around 17 cm deep.
Generally the snow cover begins to build in November. Snow mainly accumulates in Barrie during December and January. Deep snow lingers through February. Melting occurs in March and by early April the snow is mostly gone.
Average total days per month and year in Barrie with snow depth of at least 1, 5, 10 or 20 cm on the ground.
Depending on the day and season, we can wear anything from snow suits to shorts and t-shirts!
Currently, it is 18 degrees Celsius and partly cloudy, possible chance of precipitation.

I live in Brisbane. Without referencing stuff , Summer starts about November and usually finishes around End of March. This is short and tshirt weather with temps getting up to 40+ for probably a total of around 20 days. Mostly mid 30's with nights around 20ish. Sometimes temps not dropping more than 10 degrees from the top one. Summer has been very slow to leave us this year with me still in my tshirt and shorts but night temps having a hint of cool and it is nice to snuggle under blankets. Winter is jacket and long pants weather. It gets down to around 5 degrees with max around the 20. Cold days don't get much above 10. Maybe a bit of layering but not much. I haven't seen a frost in about 20 years and even those didn't survive past the sun hitting it. Spring brings the winds that send everyone crazy for a couple of weeks. Usually arrives on Ekka week. Autumn is not a visual season more just a temp slide into winter. Houses are not really designed for heating more concentrating on cooling. I don't have air conditioning but most people do. I have an Evap ac system , big fan on my roof, (works better in dryer areas) that takes up to around 10 degrees off the outside so it makes things bearable and allows my windows open. The older style Queenslander house is designed for airflow and keeping the house cool. They are a bit cold in winter with heating not working efficiently. Our rain is supposed to be summer but I am getting more rain lately than we did in Summer. Cyclones can reach down this far but it is rare. Usually just get the rain and strong wind. Usually have at least one good hail storm over summer but our suburb appears to be sheltered from the big storms. I am next to a forest so there is a bushfire danger but there has only been one out of control one that I can remember which destroyed a bundle of Uni student cars that was about 15 years ago.
ReplyDeleteHi everyone! I live in Pocono Lake, Pennsylvania USA. I live on the upper northeast side of the state in part of the Appalachian mountains. I am up on the mountain in a resort area for skiing in the winter and boating and fishing in the summer. In the fall is hunting season and people hunt the dear to eat the venison. We love hot chocolate too. We have to dress in many layers sometimes because we can see 6 feet or more of snow and temperatures well below zero! Summers can be hot during the day and cool at night. We sit on our deck and light a fire and make smores (melted marshmallows placed between 2 graham crackers with a piece of Hershey's chocolate bar). Very yummy! I love to eat the trout that is caught in the lakes and eat the fresh veggies grown by the local farms. I have tried many times to have a nice garden but between the deer, squirrels, chipmunks and even the bear nothing is left for me!
